How I Teach: Winell de Mesa, DBA, PMP

Instructors bring their collected life experience to the learning communities they build and participate in. As a 17-year active duty military officer, 6-year online adjunct business/management/leadership instructor, husband, and father of two bright and beautiful children. I bring my leadership and instructional expertise from all these roles to all the organizations I serve. I am a committed educator with a passion for teaching and connecting with students.

At the heart of my approach is conveying messages that develop an understanding of topics that leaders face. I enjoy the challenge of breaking down complex topics so everyone can discuss and produce solutions that best fit the unique circumstances every student will face in their studies and careers.

My preferred teaching method is the problem-solving and discussion method. While at the US Army Military Police School and in various online teaching environments, I used the lecture and discussion method. While I sometimes adjust, these combined methods are often best for business and leadership students.

As an online adjunct instructor, my primary teaching methods are the discussion and project methods. I teach students how to write effectively and write to meet APA/rubric standards. While I do not believe meeting APA/rubrics are the ultimate measure of scholarly excellence, they teach students to understand and meet a written standard that will always serve them well. Through APA/rubric standards, I teach students to build good writing and citation habits to apply to their academic and personal lives.

My preferred research approach is qualitative. I enjoy connecting with people and discussing and understanding their problems. Through this method, I teach and help students build relationships in all areas of their lives. I have learned that relationship building is just as important as expertise in business and life.

My varied experience, dedication to lifelong learning, and commitment to my student’s education allow me to contribute significantly and give back to society. Together, these elements form a teaching philosophy that guides me to lead and enables me to participate in any learning community, whether on-ground or online.
