Remarkably, little about the student experience has actually been studied from the student perspective. This is especially true when it comes to the growing number of interdisciplinary programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo previous study has investigated the perceptions of the students themselves,\u201d said\u00a0Scott Auerbach, professor of chemistry at UMass Amherst and the Mahoney Family Sponsored executive director of the iCons program. \u201cOur new findings suggest how to design programs that meet student needs in a world that demands more interdisciplinary workers to tackle problems in clean energy, public health, and climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Auerbach et al.\u2019s study examines the\u00a0University of Massachusetts at Amherst\u2019s Integrated Concentration in STEM program, a certificate program devoted to solving real-world problems in biomedicine and renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers identified three stages of interdisciplinary work: the \u201cchoosing\u201d stage for beginning students, the \u201cnavigating\u201d stage for advanced students, and the \u201cintegrating\u201d stage for alumni.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were very surprised by these findings, especially in discovering an interdisciplinary stage for beginning students, before they have amassed enough learning to be considered competent in their fields,\u201d said Genia Bettencourt, lead author of the paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Press release<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswise.com\/articles\/universities-love-interdisciplinary-stem-programs-but-what-about-students\">https:\/\/www.newswise.com\/articles\/universities-love-interdisciplinary-stem-programs-but-what-about-students<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The EDUCAUSE EdTech conference will be held next week in Denver<\/strong>. The conference is hosted by the nonprofit association and is widely-considered the largest community of technology, academic,<br \/>\nindustry, and campus leaders advancing higher education through the use of technology.
